How much can we take

What’s it going to take folks? At what point do we finally realize that we’re nearing the bottom of the abyss we’ve been sinking into. Sure there are pockets of resistance popping up. Sure the phone lines and emails for the folks in congress are clogging up more often. The awakenings of more and more people out of the national coma we’ve all been in is a wonderful sign. BUT, there are still far too many left to rouse before the damage is irreversible.

I’m sure most of you know of the boiling frog analogy. If you drop a frog into boiling water, it will jump back out. If you place that same frog in a pot of cool water and slowly bring the temperature under it, the frog will sit there and slowly cook to death. Back in 1905, Teddy Roosevelt took a sidestep away from the Constitution by taking State and privet land to start the National Park System. We all like trees and parks! Sure save them from greedy people that would only exploit and destroy them for their own selfish schemes. The Constitution says a little something about that, check it out, it’s a good read. Teddy bought the stove.

A few years later, a dark cloud hovered over the world. WWI had Europe turned upside down. Woodrow Wilson took a hold of the reins of America and turned it a new direction. Wilson saw the opportunity to really get his “Progressive” movement rolling. It’s a movement that is based on the belief that the Government can take care of our problems better then we can ourselves. Poor us, we can’t possibly understand our lives and situation as well as someone we’ve never met. There was much discord over the changes coming and the war. To help us out, Wilson started the Committee on Public Information. Our first organized propaganda unit, ain’t we proud we beat Hitler to it. The Palmer Raids netted a total of 50,000 arrests in 1918 alone for not believing what the Government was selling them. Around 175,000 total by the end of his term. A few that really cheesed Wilson off languished in jail until the next administration came in. Wilson grabbed a hold of the frog.

The next great seer to occupy the office was none other than Franklin Delano Roosevelt. A man obviously more important that even our First Father, George Washington. Old Frank decided that it was right to run over and over again. Find Washington’s reply when he was BEGGED to stay on the job. With the Country in the throws of the Great Depression, Frank, rather than looking into ancient history (a whole decade earlier) to find answers decided to start the largest expansion of Government since the founding to fix things. All done out of love of Country, the Country he’d like to rule over and live in. With a whole alphabet to choose from, why stop short of your goals. His new government now included the WPA, NRA (not the one you think), AAA (same deal), FDIC, TVA, SEC, NRLB and the now infamous Social Security. As with Wilson, anyone who got in his way was labeled a Nazi lover or a good friend of Adolph’s to quiet them. Just think of what old Rham would think of this two-fer, WWII and a depression at the same time. Talk about not letting a good crisis go to waste. Frank put the frog in the pot and lit the fire.

During the following decades, each and every President chucked another log on the fire. Either by his own hand or by allowing Congress to do it. Every man to hold the highest office in the land has had an agenda or pet project he wanted to complete to make his legacy stand throughout time. At some point during their tenure, each sold out a bit of their morals or values to make their own deal with the devil (or Congress, their pretty much interchangeable). Prove me wrong! Many will argue about Ike and the poster child of the modern Republican party, Ronald Reagan. They did it to a lesser degree, but it was still done in the name of getting something more important. Fires getting hot!

Over the last nine years, the lines between the parties have been almost completely erased. We’ve had two wars going that could easily be argued against (not in my opinion, but I can see the arguments). These brought us the Patriot Act, a bill to important to even wait for the ink to dry. Meanwhile, Al Gore managed to win a Nobel Prize and an Oscar. Ever think you’d see those two awards given to the same person for the same reason, Junk Science! Every member of congress must be a true believer or really afraid of Al. Each and every one of them has tried to put some kind of climate attachment on a bill since then. Whether it was related to the bill at hand or not.

These same Congressmen (hate being PC), who ranted, raved and pointed every finger possible at Bush for oil prices must have had a change of heart. Due to the Stimulus (another bill to important to read) and the Cap and Trade (ditto), the latest bill to save the world despite it’s self, oil prices will go through the roof. The future price of fuel will be far higher that anything seen under Bush. I guess under Bush it was greed, now it’s out of love for Al and Mother Earth. Water’s pretty much boiling now.

Next on the agenda is Health Care. Once again the Government knows us better then we know ourselves. They feel they can know when it’s best to see our doctors better then we can. Fines will be levied if you don’t play along by the way. I know, we have to take care of the poor. Just because hospitals can’t turn them away and programs are not being used, we need more. Stimulus money is going to advertising in some states that have programs that are not “attracting” enough users to justify their own existence. Lets just get this thing shoved through before it’s to late. You know what’s next don’t you folks, amnesty! Oh boy, a whole big bunch of new folks to help! Going to need a pot holder to get this puppy off the stove now.

For those that may have missed my little (very little) running gag, we’re the frog and it’s getting pretty hot. But wait, there’s more to come! With the sub prime bubble burst and all the baggage it brought down with it the fuel for the “don’t let a good crisis go to waste” fire is stacked beyond reach. They say those who do not read history are doomed to repeat it. Guess what Barney Frank wants to do. He wants to try all over again with the sub primes, BRILLIANT! The only folks these days with job security are the folks that make the paper and ink our money is made out of. We’re printing money faster than anyone can count. Can you say Weimar? Think the printers want paid with what they are printing since they can watch the value go down as quick as they print? If I may I want to ask again the opening question, what’s it going to take to wake people up? How’s the frog holding up folks?

These words still hold up today, perhaps not quite the same urgency as then, but they still hold a lot of meaning.

"In Germany, they came first for the Communists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist;
And then they came for the trade unionists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist;
And then they came for the Jews, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew;
And then... they came for me... And by that time there was no one left to speak up."

Living in Egypt

What does Obama and an Egyptian have in common? They both require "denial" to live. Lets explore a tributary or two on this river shall we. Oh where to start? How about with the last fiasco to come out of the House at his request, Cap and Trade. "Make no mistake: This is a jobs bill," Obama said. "We're already seeing why this is true in the clean energy investments we're making through the Recovery Act.". He is right, it is a bill that will affect many jobs. It will crush them out of existence under the weight of regulation and tax. Who cares that in Spain it killed 2 jobs for every one it made. Remember he did promise to bankrupt the coal industry during his campaign. Can't accuse him of not trying to follow through. This bill pushes solar and wind power. Sources of power that have yet to produce enough energy to pay for themselves before their working parts are past their useful life. Pundents far and wide that are behind this bill use Denmark as a shining example. What they leave out is the fact that Denmark has yet to shut down any fossil fuel plants, and has no plans to do so. The reasoning behind all the noise about "crap and tirade" is the Almighty AlGore. All wise and all knowing defender of the Earth and it's creatures. Look at the all Polar bears he has managed to save from the melting ice caps. The ice caps that have not lost total mass, just shifted their building direction. Who cares that on their own, those nutty bears have managed to increase their numbers exponentially. The man that will save us from the evil carbon menace. Carbon that has no proven effect on global temperature. The all knowing one that can't pay yet any "expert" to explain how the temperature on other planets has gone up and down at the same rate as us. Next fork in the river takes us back to the distant past. When, having to fix the errors of the despot known only as BUSH, the all mighty O forced through congress a yet to be read bill known as The Stimulus. This bill was all that stood between us and financial ruin. So naturally prior to signing it, he took the Mrs. on a date to the old home town. It was a piece of prose that could change the course of the mighty rush of industry! All industry except the one place that he chose to introduce this fine bill. Cat has yet to bring anyone back that I know of at this time. Over the past week we have heard of the great things that this bill hath wrought. Unless of course you listen to Biden that says things are worse then they thought. Damn unemployment for not listening and staying below 9% like the bill was supposed to do. Of course that wacky Biden got it all wrong and everything is rosy according to Obama. He would do nothing different, every things fine, move along, nothing to see here. Regardless of the current situation, the bulk of the money will be meted out next year. You know, when the congress that approved this are running for reelection. Forget your troubles today, it will all be fine after our great grand kids get done paying for it. The next siding we come to is one not yet explored by us. There have been many brave countries to attempt the daring trip down this rapid and rocky stream though. The river of no return, Public Health Care! Don't look behind the curtain and see that those countries are starting to try and get away from it. Who cares that a majority of Americans are against it. Forget the fact that Medicare and Medicaid are dying a slow and painful death due to mismanagement. The Obama plan is fool proof and will work regardless of the fact that it will be run by the same type of folks that run the others. Full steam ahead, damn the torpedo's! Lets just look past the fact that something like Tort reform could solve most of the cost problems with the current system. Enough of the thrilling ride down the Obama rapids for today kids. Go back to watching American Idol and let Congress and our Commander in Chief handle the heavy lifting for you. I'm sure it will all be fine.

Main Entry: en·ti·tle·ment
Pronunciation: \-ˈtī-təl-mənt\
Function: noun
Date: 1942
1 a: the state or condition of being entitled : right b: a right to benefits specified especially by law or contract
2: a government program providing benefits to members of a specified group ; also : funds supporting or distributed by such a program
3: belief that one is deserving of or entitled to certain privileges

This is a very powerful word these days. The dictionary makes it seem so clean cut, fair and proper. Of course it leaves out the source of the payment of any benefits received by a "specified group". Lets break it down shall we. At its core is the root word "entitle","to furnish with proper grounds for seeking or claiming something ". What are the proper grounds that makes the folks in DC think they have more right to our hard earned money than we do. It does not appear to be the will of the voters who clogged the switchboards in DC on Friday. "To furnish with proper grounds", so the folks in congress can just make something up? "Furnish" a reason why someone needs something? Forget the facts, ignore common sense?

1 a:(from above), the state or condition of being entitled : right. Someone is owed something. How did they earn this boon they are owed. Being owed normally implies a give and take. Right now, they will take all we can give and more. b: a right to benefits specified especially by law or contract. Shouldn't Congress take the facts and our voices into account before binding us with a new law or contract? 2: a government program providing benefits to members of a specified group ; also : funds supporting or distributed by such a program. Once again, I ask who out of the goodness of their hearts willing to give more for programs we don't want or need. 3: belief that one is deserving of or entitled to certain privileges. The "belief" that one is deserving, not the fact that one is deserving.

With the word defined, lets see what we can make out of cap and trade. Who's "entitled", what "specified group" is to receive this suddenly massive amount of money that will be available. How about those nutty Polar bears that just refuse to decrease in numbers. Maybe the makers of solar and wind power devices that won't pay for themselves until they reach the end of their useful life. How about paying for the "green jobs" that will be the result of this bill. You know the jobs that will kill 2 jobs for every 1 created(check out Spain's foray into this). Here's a thought, maybe we can fix the problem with Antarctica. The ice is receding on the East side! We must figure out how to get all that extra that's forming on the West back to the East! Total mass be damned, we must have balance! Personally, I'm not willing to pay for any of that crap. It's alright though, soon I will qualify for the other entitlements out there. Food stamps, unemployment, welfare, all the fun stuff.
